If you have had an injury or recent surgery that prevents you from placing weight on your legs and feet, you may need to use crutches to help you get around. Crutches are useful when you are unable to bear partial or full body weight on your legs and feet.

Using a cane is helpful when you have minor problems with stability and balance or if you have weakness in your legs or body’s core. A cane might be of assistance when you have an injury or pain in the lower part of your body.

Canes and crutches may allow you more independence and freedom to do activities you enjoy because they can make walking easier, safer, and more comfortable.

When using a cane or crutches at home, there are several things to you can do to make it safer to move around:

  • Remove electrical cords and loose rugs: These items are easy to slip or get caught on.
  • Create a pathway between different rooms in the home: Rearrange furniture to create enough space to move freely while using your walking aid.
  • Ensure stairways are clear: Avoid placing clutter, boxes or other items in the stairwell.
  • Install proper lighting in common traffic areas in the home: Place a nightlight between the bathroom and bedroom and in dark stairways.
  • Use bathroom safety aids: Place grab bars, non-slip bathroom mats, and an elevated toilet and bath seat.
  • Use items that allow you to carry things around the home hands-free: Aprons, backpacks and fanny packs are helpful for carrying items without having to use your hands.

Types of Crutches

There are several types of crutches available depending on which part of the body you need to reduce weight-bearing forces:

• Axillary crutches made of aluminum or wood can be adjusted to your shoulder and hand height to allow you to bear weight under the arms and reduce weight-bearing forces on the lower body.
• Forearm crutches allow the elbows to flex 15-30 degrees to exert more pressure on the arms than axillary crutches allow.
• Platform crutches have lower cuffs that allow contact on the area between the wrist and back of elbow to provide stability.
• Strutter crutches are used under the arms. The bottom part of the crutch remains flat against the floor to enhance weight distribution and support an even walking gait.
• Leg support crutches provide a support surface with a frame on wheels. Strap the knee onto to frame to prevent weight-bearing on the lower leg.

Types of Canes

There are a variety of types of canes to choose from depending on your specific needs and style preferences:

• Crook neck walking canes are typically made of wood and are used to provide balance support and reduce pressure on the opposite side of the body.
• Derby handle walking canes have an ergonomically shaped handle and are more stylish than canes with a crook neck.
• Palm anatomical handle walking canes offer different handles for left and right-hand use. This cane is often used by people who have difficulty gripping a cane handle.
• Knob handle walking canes feature a regular or decorative knob. This cane provides balance support and may also serve as a defence weapon or fashion accessory.
• Folding walking canes can be compressed to make storing and packing them more convenient.
• Blind walking canes are lightweight and not suitable for bearing weight on or providing balance support. People with reduced vision use this type of cane to detect obstacles in their path of movement.

We offer several types of canes and crutches to assist you with mobility. Choose from a variety of canes and crutches to quickly get you moving around more conveniently.
